How I Put a Webflow Site in Git Before a High-Risk Launch
A practical Webflow-to-static-Git workflow for safer launches, backups, and deployment QA.
I like Webflow for moving a storefront or campaign page from idea to something credible fast. The awkward part arrives when the page is about to become important: a seasonal launch, a paid-traffic landing page, or a redesign that must coexist with the live site. At that point, I want a version I can inspect, test, and roll back without treating the production designer as my only source of truth.\n\nMy answer has been to export the published site into a Git repository before the risky part of the launch. It is not a replacement for Webflow while the team is designing; it is a release artifact. That distinction makes the workflow much less dramatic.\n\n
\n\n## The release artifact I actually need\n\nA useful static copy is more than the home page saved from a browser. For an ecommerce-adjacent Webflow build, I expect the export to carry the pages, CMS-generated routes, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, metadata, and the small interaction details that make a landing page feel finished. If any of those are absent, Git gives me a very tidy record of a broken deployment.\n\nWebflow’s native export is helpful for straightforward static work, but CMS-heavy sites are where I slow down and check the output carefully. For that job I use ExFlow’s Webflow exporter: I give it the published URL, let it collect the static site files, then download a ZIP or sync the result to Git. The point is not to promise that every dynamic integration becomes static. The point is to get a portable, reviewable version of the published experience.\n\n## My five-step Webflow-to-Git release workflow\n\n### 1. Freeze a boring, known-good URL\n\nI export the current published site, not a half-finished preview. I also write down the handful of URLs that matter to the launch: home, collection or offer page, top conversion page, contact page, and a representative CMS entry. This gives the later QA pass something concrete to compare against.\n\nThat same small release-note habit is why I use a size-chart release gate before a collection drop. A launch checklist works best when it names the customer-facing paths that cannot quietly regress.\n\n### 2. Export the full static package\n\nIn ExFlow, I choose the Webflow export and capture the generated files rather than grabbing a single page. The useful output includes HTML, stylesheets, scripts, media, and the pages that a crawler or customer will actually request. ExFlow can deliver that as a ZIP or sync it to Git, S3, or FTP; I prefer Git first because it turns the export into a reviewable change set.\n\n
\n\nFor a client handoff, the ZIP is plenty. Three months later, you should be able to tell which version represents the last stable site without reconstructing a Slack thread.\n\n### 3. Treat the export as a static-hosting candidate\n\nA repository is not automatically a deployment. I deploy the exported output to a staging host first, whether that is GitHub Pages, S3, a traditional FTP server, or a static host already in the stack. QA what a crawler and customer can break\n\nI do not just open the homepage and call it done. I also identify anything that cannot be static by itself, especially forms, search, customer accounts, or third-party widgets. Those items need an endpoint or a deliberate replacement; exporting the markup does not make the service portable.\n\n
\n\nFor image-heavy storefront pages, I add the same care I use when I audit Shopify product images before publishing: open the real route on desktop and mobile, check the network-loaded assets, and catch one missing source before an ad campaign does it for you.\n\n### 5. Keep the static copy useful after launch\n\nOnce staging passes, I keep the repository as a backup and a baseline for future changes. That makes a client handoff cleaner, gives developers a concrete diff during a redesign, and provides a route to lower-maintenance static hosting if the project no longer needs Webflow hosting for the live version.\n\nFor ecommerce teams, the same principle applies outside the marketing site. It is less complete for an application whose value comes from server-side features. That is not a failure of the export; it is a planning boundary worth documenting before you switch DNS or cancel a hosting plan.\n\nIf Webflow is not your builder, ExFlow also has dedicated exporters for Squarespace and Framer. I would still pick one platform per release workflow, because their assets and interaction patterns deserve platform-specific QA.\n\nMy next action is simple: export one known-good Webflow URL, commit it, deploy it somewhere private, and compare five critical routes side by side. If that passes, you have a practical fallback and a cleaner starting point for the next high-risk launch.
