I Keep a Framer Static Handoff in Git Before Client Launch
A practical Framer export, QA, and Git deployment workflow that gives client sites a portable static backup before launch.
I like Framer for getting a marketing site to a polished state quickly. The awkward part arrives at handoff: the client wants a backup, a staging copy, and a way to deploy a small change without treating the live Framer project as the only source of truth.
My answer is now a static handoff in Git before launch. It is not a replacement for the design file or a promise that every app-like feature becomes static. It is a tested snapshot of the published site that the client can host, review, and recover from. The handoff is a deployment, not a download
A random ZIP in a client folder is better than nothing, but it cannot answer useful questions: which version went live, did the mobile menu survive, and can someone roll back a broken change? My Framer static-handoff workflow
1. Freeze the published URL I am exporting
I export the production-like published URL, not a half-finished preview. Before I start, I list the routes that matter: homepage, campaign pages, legal pages, contact page, and any CMS-driven collection pages. I also write down special behaviour: anchors, nav menus, motion sections, embeds, forms, and locale routes.
That scope prevents the classic handoff surprise where the hero looks perfect but the case-study pages or footer links were never checked. If the team is already comfortable with static publishing, the discipline is similar to moving a Webflow campaign site into Git before the next launch: capture a known-good site first, then make deployment repeatable.
2. Export platform-aware files, then inspect the shape
I enter the published URL in ExFlow, choose the Framer workflow, and generate the export. A platform-specific exporter is helpful here because modern Framer sites depend on more than visible HTML: they often need fonts, images, scripts, media, and animation support to travel together.
I unpack the ZIP into a new repository rather than copying it over an older export. My first pass is deliberately boring:

That gives me a real baseline. If an asset disappears later, I can compare the output instead of guessing whether it was ever there.

3. Run a browser QA pass before changing hosts
I serve the export locally or deploy it to a private static preview. Then I test the things most likely to break in a static copy: responsive layouts, navigation, internal links, images, fonts, metadata, scripts, animations, and interactive sections. I manually test every form, too. Some forms rely on a service or integration that needs its own configuration after the export.
For a larger site, I start with a route list and check desktop plus a narrow mobile viewport. I also open DevTools once to catch missing files and console errors. the page count is not enough; assets and routes have to resolve in the new environment.
4. Choose the hosting target based on ownership
For a small client site, Git plus a static host is usually my default. The repo creates an audit trail; the host gives the client a deployable preview. The decision is not about making Framer disappear. It is about reducing dependence on one live project for backups and handoff. Keep the original Framer project for editing, but give the client a working static artifact they can retain.
What I put in the handoff note
My final handoff note has four items: the exported URL and date, the Git repository and commit, the hosting destination, and a short list of features that need a live integration check. That is enough for a future developer to understand what they received without excavating a long email thread.
