I used to treat a product image as finished once the background was clean and the crop looked right. Then a supplier sent over a batch of photos that had made a few extra stops: a freelancer, a shared drive, a review deck, and a client Slack. The pixels were fine. The files were not necessarily as boring as they looked.

That is the point at which I added a metadata pass to my Shopify image workflow. It is a small preflight step, but it is easier than explaining why a supposedly ordinary image contains camera information, timestamps, or location data. I do not need a giant DAM or an image editor open for this. I use Tiny Online Tools because it gives me a fast, browser-based way to deal with one narrow job without another account or upload queue.

The problem is usually the handoff, not Shopify

Shopify is rarely the only destination for product imagery. Before an image reaches a product page, it might get emailed to a manufacturer, dropped into a press kit, attached to a support ticket, or used in a launch brief. Those copies can leave your normal publishing controls. A photo from a phone can carry EXIF fields such as camera model, capture date, and sometimes GPS coordinates. A designer export can retain comments or other metadata you did not mean to send along.

This is not a reason to panic about every JPG. It is a reason to make the decision deliberately. If I am sharing original or near-original supplier photos, employee-shot imagery, location-specific samples, or a media pack headed outside the team, I check the metadata before I send it. The clean version becomes the version we share and upload.

My five-minute image metadata preflight

1. Separate the source from the publishable copy

I keep the original capture or supplied master untouched. Then I make a working copy for the storefront. This matters because stripping metadata is a delivery decision, not a restoration technique. If we later need the original capture time, camera profile, or a higher-quality master, it is still there.

For Shopify work, I usually name the copy for its destination before doing anything else: linen-shirt-sand-front.jpg, not IMG_4821-final-final.jpg. That gives the team one obvious file to inspect, approve, and upload. It also pairs nicely with the basic product photo QA checklist we use before a collection goes live.

2. Inspect the file before you remove anything

I am looking for a practical answer, not an archaeology project: does this file include location data, a camera/device identifier, a capture timestamp, author information, or anything odd enough that I would not want it forwarded?

If a photo needs attribution, a color profile, or other production context, I want the person owning the asset to make that call—not for a last-minute upload to decide it by accident. This is the same mindset I use when I prepare screenshots before sharing them with a client: inspect the thing you are actually about to send.

3. Strip metadata from the working copy

Once the copy is approved for cleanup, I run it through Remove Image Metadata. The tool accepts JPEG, PNG, and WebP files and is designed to strip EXIF, GPS, XMP, comments, and related embedded data. 4. Recheck the downloaded file

I reopen the downloaded version in the metadata viewer, especially for images that started as phone captures or came from outside the team. A second check confirms that the file I am attaching is the file I intended to clean. It also catches the most ordinary operational mistake: accidentally uploading the original from Downloads while the cleaned copy sits beside it.

This is a good moment to run the rest of your storefront checks. Confirm the filename, dimensions, crop, and transparency where relevant. For PNG product assets, I also like the lightweight transparent PNG preflight before the image is committed to a theme or sent to a partner.

5. Make the clean version the canonical share file

The biggest benefit is not the one-time removal. It is teaching the team where the safe handoff lives. Put the cleaned asset in the shared launch folder, attach it to the product ticket, or use it as the source in your Shopify media upload. Then nobody has to guess whether the copy in an email thread is the one that should be reused.

For a high-volume catalog, I would document this in the same place as image ratios and naming rules: source master retained, share/publish copy inspected, metadata removed when the handoff calls for it, storefront file approved. A tiny rule like that scales better than a reminder in every launch Slack.

Where this fits in a real launch

My actual sequence is: pick the source image, make a named delivery copy, inspect metadata, strip it if the file is leaving its original context, recheck it, then optimize and upload. The order is helpful because it keeps every transformation legible. If something looks wrong later, I know whether to revisit the crop, the format conversion, or the metadata step.
